Upcoming Concerts

FRIDAY, May 9, 8:30 p.m.
Eliza Gilkyson
w/ special guest Gretchen Peters
location: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair

When Eliza Gilkyson comes to the Outpost, you can be sure of a memorable evening. The daughter of successful songwriter Terry Gilkyson, Eliza is a third-generation musician who grew up in Los Angeles knowing that her life would revolve around music. Eliza’s first album on Red House, Hard Times in Babylon came out in 2000, and soon after came another critical success – Lost and Found. Her 2004 release, Land of Milk and Honey was nominated for a Grammy® in the category of Best Contemporary Folk Album. The CD was decidedly socio/political in nature, from the Iraq War awareness plea, “Hiway 9,” to the call for peace in Woody Guthrie’s previously unrecorded and timely peace anthem, “Peace Call,” a track featuring vocals by friends and fellow artists Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Iris DeMent. 2005’s Paradise Hotel featured songs that artfully revealed the roots of her progressive patriotism and commented on the direction our world is headed by peeling back the thin layers obscuring the heart of what matters in these complex times. The album included guest appearances by Shawn Colvin and Ray Bonneville and includes vocal support from an all-star Austin cast including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Slaid Cleaves, Marcia Ball and others. Eliza has recently appeared on NPR, Austin City Limits, Air America Radio and has toured with Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. The New York Times wrote, “Gilkyson doesn’t pull any punches. She graces the music with her lush and passionate voice; a dark and lonely sound, hope and satisfaction, and edgy lyrics with piercing imagery round out the whole.” And The Dallas Morning News says, “her work is too good to be ignored. She sings with plaintive power and writes with soulful strength.”

Additional directions

FRIDAY, May 16, 8:30 p.m.
Steve Forbert
w/ special guest Martha Scanlon
location: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair

Nearly 30 years since breaking into pop consciousness with his second album Jackrabbit Slim and its infectious Top Ten single “Romeo’s Tune,” Steve Forbert remains a master of songs offering clear-eyed insight and plain-spoken, heartfelt eloquence. Growing up in Meridian, Mississippi, Steve Forbert first picked up the guitar at age 10 and moved at 21 to New York City, where he performed for spare change in Grand Central Station before working his way up through the Manhattan club circuit. Performing at Folk City and eventually opening for artists like Talking Heads and John Cale at CBGB, Forbert became something of a local sensation. His 1978 debut Alive On Arrival offered a first look at his colorful mix of spare acoustic introspection and scrappy rock ‘n’ roll to become one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. His breakthrough single, “Romeo’s Tune” expanded his audience substantially in 1979. The New York Times wrote, “His gorgeously ragged voice makes every song a soulful lament, making him a sort of male Billie Holiday with his singer-songwriter rock genre...Mr Forbert’s hope-spun lyrics are delectable.” On performing, Steve says“ I enjoy playing live, especially because I relate quite a bit to the audience I have at this point.”
$22 in advance; $25 on May 16

FRIDAY, May 23, 8:30 p.m.
The Falcon Ridge Preview Tour
featuring: Anthony da Costa, Lindsay Mac,
Joe Crookston and Randall Williams
w/ special guests “Spill Trouble” of Parents Who Rock
location: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair

Once again, the performers voted “Most Wanted to Return” at Falcon Ridge usher in festival season with a night at the Outpost. Anthony da Costa is a 17-year-old performing songwriter from Pleasantville, New York. In the first two months of 2008, he: released his sixth record, Typical American Tragedy; opened for Livingston Taylor and Susan Werner; was nominated as Folk Alliance Emerging Artist of the Year; and recorded his seventh record, Bad Nights, Better Days — a duo project with his duo partner, Abbie Gardner of Red Molly — in three days. 2007 wasn’t half-bad either. Anthony was the youngest winner ever of the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk and Falcon Ridge’s Emerging Artist competitions. He also showcased at the Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival in Nashville and was a Mountain Stage New Song Contest Finalist. Anthony’s writing and performing draw from a deep well of rich musical influences — from Bob Dylan and Dan Bern, to Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, to Ryan Adams and Johnny Cash.

Randall Williams. Two hours after informing his voice teacher that he was leaving the world of classical music, Randall Williams graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Mons, Belgium at the head of his class. He felt that classical music lacked the inclusiveness of folk music, so Randall returned to the world of traveling with his guitar. Randall is as much at home in a Bangkok slum or a Senegalese village, at the Kennedy Center in D.C. or the Fine Arts Palace in Brussels sandwiched between a twitchy orchestra and a full house, or shoeless on the floor of your living room. Randall has sung in a dozen languages in over 35 countries.

Lindsay Mac. Classically trained cellist and singer-songwriter Lindsay Mac offers a fresh look at acoustic music by combining folk/pop structure with plucked and bowed cello. Wonderfully diverse and memorable, her music has roots in jazz, folk, Americana, funk and rock while not tasting like any specific genre. Lindsay has opened for KD Lang, Catie Curtis, Vance Gilbert and Girlyman.

Joe Crookston. Whether it’s his hypnotic guitar sound, bubbling banjo, or short story lyrics, Joe Crookston’s music draws from his rural Ohio roots, and his urban adventures, exuding a remarkable universal, and timeless quality. Joe was recently awarded a year-long grant (2006-2007) from The Rockefeller Foundation to travel around the state of New York, interview local residents, gather stories and write songs based on his experiences. His project is called, “Songs of the Finger Lakes.” “Fall Down as the Rain” was chosen by Performing Songwriter magazine as a 2004 “TOP-12-Do-It-Yourself” independent recording, was featured on National Public Radio’s “All Songs Considered”, as well as Syndicated Minnesota Public Radio, The Midnight Special and Folkscene. He has shared festival stages with the likes of Livingston Taylor, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Reynolds, John Gorka and many others. “Go see this man perform, and don’t be surprised if you drive home singing his songs with a renewed sense of what’s possible.” — Seattle Folklore Society.
